What You Will Do :

We are currently searching for a Scientist to independently provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). The primary

objective is to provide services and deliverables through performance of support services. This is a full-time, on-site opportunity in Bethesda, MD.

  • Study basic principles of plant and animal life, such as origin, relationship, development, anatomy, and function.

  • Plan and conduct biological research programs.

  • Identify, classify, and study structure, behavior, ecology, physiology, nutrition, culture, and distribution of plant and animal species.

  • Organize daily laboratory notebook on experiments.

  • Prepare biweekly updates on on-going experiments and tasks and present progress reports on assigned projects at group meetings.

  • Monitor and observe experiments, recording production and test data for evaluation by research personnel.

  • Analyze experimental data and interpret results to write reports and summaries of findings.

  • Be responsible for the management of the Usdin Laboratory mouse colony. This work includes: maintaining stocks of essential mouse strains, coordinating the import of additional mice into the mouse colony and the export of mice/mouse embryos/mouse sperm to other facilities as needed, ensuring the cryo-preservation and cryo-recovery of appropriate mouse lines, develop appropriate genotyping assays for new mouse lines, supervise the generation of new mouse lines both by CRISPR-mediated gene-editing of embryos and appropriate breeding strategies using pre-existing mutant mice, overseeing CRISPR-mediated gene-editing of embryos and appropriate breeding strategies using pre-existing mutant mice, overseeing the generation of embryonic stem cell and embryonic fibroblasts derived from these animals, design and prepare animal study protocols and standard operation procedures (SOPs).

  • Conduct research on the molecular mechanisms responsible for mutation and disease pathology in the Repeat Expansion Disorders, with a focus on the Fragile X-related disorder, Friedreich ataxia and GLC Deficiency.

  • Prepare experimental results, including images, blots, expression data, etc. and reports on the experimental design notes and progress of research programs, studies, and trials.

What You Will Need :

  • Master’s degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics or Biochemical Sciences plus three (3) years specialized experience.

  • Overall, at least five (5) years of experience in a science-related field.

  • Demonstrated expertise in the generation and analysis of mouse models such as performing pluripotent stem cell culture or differentiation.

  • Significant scientific training in the areas of mouse and human genetics, stem cell biology, flow cytometry, DNA and protein purification, or the genetics of repeat expansion mutations and their analysis.

What Would Be Nice To Have :

  • PhD is preferred.

  • Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.

  • Strong publication record.

  • Strong communications skills, both oral and written.
